Originally reserved for samurai, this is a form of Japanese ritual suicide by disembowelment. This was voluntarily used by samurai to die with honor or as a form of capital punishment for samurai who had committed serious offences and bought shame to themselves. How do we popularly know this practice, which is sometimes metastasized as harakiri.
